Jalan Putra – Alor Setar

Among the many main roads in Alor Setar, Jalan Putra is among the longest. This road is instrumental in providing the access for vehicles and motorists who come in through the western parts of the city towards the main commercial areas of the capital for work each day.

Landmarks and Subroads
Jalan Putra starts from the west at the Jalan Kangar-Alor Setar and Sultanah Bahiyah Highway and continues on until it reaches the heart of Alor Setar. Along the way, Jalan Putra passes by prominent locations like Sentosa Plaza and Rumah Merdeka as well as several resident areas. The historical clock tower is located towards the eastern end of this road.

Coming in from the highway, you will first reach the Lembaga Kemajuan Pertanian Muda which is located adjacent to the Sekolah Menengah Mergong. This is not far from the intersection that connects you with Taman Mutiara towards the north and Kampung Mempelam towards the south. Further downwards, you will reach the Jalan Tembaga intersection which will bring you towards the collection of automotive-related outlets. You will then be running parallel with Jalan Putra 4 where there is a CIMB Bank and Nippon Paint outlet here. The Pertubuhan Peladang Kuala Sungai I-II Sungai Mada while further up is where you will come towards the Pasar Malam Mergong. You will then cut across Jalan Gangsa before reaching Sungai Kedah. This road continues on before terminating at the Lebuhraya Darul Aman junction.

That which makes Jalan Putra so important is that it is one of the only access for motorists to get into the city and because of this, billboards along this road can be clearly seen and would be very effective for advertisers to reach out to this target segment. As such, Jalan Putra plays a pivotal role as the main access roads used by white collar workers who are travelling between the residential areas into the city centre. Motorists are seen using this road throughout the day who are travelling for work, school and entertainment.

Traffic Conditions
From the Jalan Kangar-Alor Setar junction, traffic flow is usually peak to super peak throughout the day. During the rush hours, it is mostly super peak. Along the stretch where the school is located, traffic is mostly peak during the start and end of schooling hours while it is moderate at other times. After that, the following stretch is quite smooth until the Jalan Tembaga intersection where it peaks again. At the Jalan Gangsa intersection, traffic flow is unusually high and is usually super peak during rush hours. It then eases up as traffic continues at the river before spiking again at the Plaza Sentosa location. At the other end of Jalan Putra meanwhile, you will notice that traffic condition is usually super peak to peak as vehicles are connecting to Lebuhraya Darul Aman.
