Jalan Dato Keramat is located in the central area of Georgetown, the capital of Penang. It is an important access road that connects people from all walks of life coming in from both ends of the island. Jalan Dato Keramat is an important access road here mainly because it is used by motorists to commute to work each day and by tourists to get around the city center and out to the suburbs.
As a main road operating in the city centre of Georgetown, Jalan Dato Keramat is mainly used by working adults who travel from the western side of Penang Island into the city centre for work each day. This is because Jalan Dato Keramat is connected with Jalan Penang where Komtar is located which is where many other office buildings are situated as well. Besides that, this road is used by college students who travel into the city for education and entertainment each day.
Landmarks and sub-roads
It runs from the east to the west and is adjacent to with Jalan Anson. On the western end of Jalan Dato Keramat is the cross-junction of Jalan Perak where Jalan Dato Keramat ends and Jalan Ayer Hitam starts. Meanwhile, on the eastern end, Jalan Dato Keramat joins with Jalan Macalister at another cross-junction before heading northwards through Jalan Penang.
Connects Georgetown with other suburbs
Unlike Jalan Macalister, Jalan Dato Keramat is not very long but it is an important road as it connects many roads in between. Along this road is where Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Convent Dato Keramat is located where it operates on a 2-way traffic flow.
Other known locations here include the Federal Place Chinese Cuisine and the Lim’s Dental Surgery operates. Through Jalan Dato Keramat, there is an intersection that leads to the 69 Boutique Hotel via Jalan Kampung Jawa Baru while Birch House is located around here as well. From the intersection with Jalan Macalister, commuters and vehicles will be able to head out towards other major areas of Georgetown like the infamous Komtar building, Traders Hotel as well as the 1Avenue Mall, one of the luxurious malls in Penang today.
Jalan Dato Keramat, being a main road in the city of Georgetown would naturally be congested throughout the day. From the eastern part of this stretch, you will experience super peak traffic conditions mostly throughout the day. During the morning and evening rush hours, this part of Jalan Dato Keramat could come to a complete standstill.
This situation actually starts from the Jalan Air Hitam intersection as you are about to head into Jalan Dato Keramat proper. Once you are in this road, the situation does not improve any further where it is mostly super peak to peak conditions before easing up around the Jalan Pahang and Jalan Siam areas.
It then peaks again and this will go on until the Jalan Magazine junction. This is where it is very congested throughout the day, on weekends and even at night as you are approaching the Komtar-Jalan Penang area.
