Jalan Penang

Jalan Penang is a main road that cuts across the heart of Georgetown, the capital city of Penang. It is a very long stretch that starts from the north and moves southbound. Jalan Penang is a very prominent road in the city as it connects thousands of people from one place to another each day which passes by a string of important landmarks and locations.

Jalan Penang is the address that houses the Komtar Building known as an important icon of the state. Besides that, it is near to the main bus and taxi terminal of the state which means that Jalan Penang is used by private vehicles as well as public transportation that commute in and out of Georgetown each day.

Jalan Penang is located in the heart of Georgetown and is home to some of the major hotels here. As Penang is one of the top tourist destinations in the region, this is the road used to ferry hotel guests to the nearby attractions. As such, the main group of segment here are tourists and visitors to Penang who can be both local and foreign. Besides that, Jalan Penang is connected to the Komtar Building and the surroundings which is known as the commercial centre of the state. This means that working adults use this road to commute to and from work each day.

Landmarks and Sub-Roads
Jalan Penang starts around the Komtar Building and heads upwards. It starts at the cross-junction of Jalan Dato Keramat and Jalan Macalister. Along the way, it opens up to Jalan Burma before going towards the seaside and terminating at Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah. It is along Jalan Penang that many of the city’s attractions are located. The Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion is located just off Jalan Penang around the northern parts while there are several hotels operating here as well. This includes The Merchant, Ai Goh Hotel and Oriental Hotel.

Other places of interest around Jalan Penang include the Penang Bazaar, Mydin Penang as well as the Penang Police Headquarters. On top of that, Jalan Penang provides access towards the highly prestigious E&O Hotel located along Lorong Farquhar while it has an intersection into Lebuh Chulia that can lead towards Lebuh Pantai towards the southern regions.

Traffic Conditions
If you are coming in from the south through Jalan Dato Keramat, you will experience peak to super peak traffic flow the minute you leave the junction. This is a common occurrence here which will only ease to become moderate during rare hours of the day. On weekends, this stretch can be moderate to peak due to the heavy flow of public transportation. Once you are in the heart of the city, traffic starts to peak again and becomes super peak especially during the morning and evening rush hours. At the Lebuh Chulia junction meanwhile, you can expect traffic to be at a standstill at most times of the day. After that, it will be moderate to high again until the Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah junction.
